About Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya

Jawahar NAVODAYA Vidyalayas (JNVs) are a chain of schools for talented students mainly from rural areas in India. They are managed by NAVODAYA VIDYALAYA SAMITI (NVS), New Delhi.

Jawahar NAVODAYA Vidyalayas (JNVs) are affiliated to CBSE. They are residential Schools offering free education to talented children from Class-VI to XII. JNVs provide free accommodation and food for all the students. All daily use items, school uniforms and even books and copies are also provided to the students free of cost.


 

Medium of Instruction

The medium of instruction in Jawahar NAVODAYA Vidyalayas ( JNVs ) is mother-tongue / regional language upto VII or VIII Class. Thereafter the common medium would be Hindi / English in all Navodaya Vidyalayas.


 

Campus :

NAVODAYA Vidyalayas (JNVs) campuses are generally located in the remote areas of a country. These campuses are spread in approx 30 acres (12.14 hectares) of land which are provided by the State Government free of cost.

Normally these campuses constitutes an academic block, residential blocks for both students and staff, play grounds and mess. The academic block consists of classrooms, library, laboratories, computer center and convention halls. Residential buildings provided for students, faculty, and staff.


 

JNVST ( Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test )

Each year NAVODAYA Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) conducts an entrance exam to select students for admission in Class 6. The Entrance exam is named as Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test . JNVST is conducted in two phases. Students who pass in Phase I exam appear in Phase II exam. Those students who clear the second phase exam are allowed to take admission in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs).

JNVST basically check Mental Ability, Arithmetic knowledge along with Language knowledge of the students. 50 % of weightage is given to Mental Ability while 25% weightage to both Language and Arithmetic Knowledge. No minimum marks is fixed for passing JNVST. Cutoff marks varies from year to year. Generally there are 80 seats for class 6 for each JNV.

In order to use the infrastructure and staff facilities available in Jawahar NAVODAYA Vidyalaya to its full capacity, vacant seats in Class-9 are filled up through Lateral Entry Test. So one can also take admission in Class 9 by clearing Lateral Entry Test. The Lateral Entry Test gets organized only if there are vacant seats in Class 9 in Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas.

Students can also get admission in Class 11 provided vacant seats are available. Vacant seats in JNVs are notified every year in the local newspapers by the JNV concerned of that district.

According to the NAVODAYA Vidyalaya Scheme, usually one Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya is set up in each District in a phased manner. At present, 661 Navodaya Vidyalayas are sanctioned in 28 States and 07 Union Territories, out of which 636 are functioning. The State-wise distribution of JNVs sanctioned is given below :
